What is the history of Hayden Lake?

 

The Coeur d’Alene tribe territory centered around what is now Hayden Lake and nearby Lake Coeur d'Alene, gathering plants, including abundant huckleberries, fish, and wildlife. The first man to visit the area was Father DeSmet while serving as a missionary to the Coeur d’Alene Indians. While visiting, he named it Lake DeNuf and recorded several stories told by the local tribe about the lake and the surrounding area.

 

Then in the 1870s arrived the first homesteaders, Mr. Strahorn (first name unrecorded), and three soldiers from Fort Sherman (Matt Hayden, John Hager, and John Hickey) settled in the area. Legend has it that Hayden and Hager, whose homestead was on the land of the present-day Hayden Lake Country Club, played a game of seven-up to determine who should name the lake. Hayden won the card game.

 

Famous for orchard crops involving apples, pear, cherries, and plum fruit. The orchard crop led to the first packing plant built in 1914. The Wood Box Manufacturing Plant was located in the northwest corner of the orchard and operated from 1946 – 90.
